Kinks and Fetishes – What’s the difference?

Kinks and fethishes

Kinks and Fetishes

Kinks and fetishes are prevalent in society. Many people have one or both, but do we really understand what they are and how they differ? I want to explore the topic in this, and a series of follow-up articles.

Before we get into it, I would like you to note that kinks are subjective. What might be wildly kinky to you, might very well be vanilla as all hell to to someone else, and vice-versa. There is no right or wrong when it comes to our kinks and fetishes. As long as your kink/fetish is legal, and fully consentual if it involves a third party, then go right ahead and induldge in whatever gets you going.

What is a Kink?

A kink is something someone enjoys doing by themselves or with a consenting partner. It is usually an activity considered outside of the mainstream norm. Kinks usually provide extra erotic energy to a sexual encounter and its participants. Think, roleplay, BDSM, sex toys or a threesome, to name but a few.

What is a fetish?

A fetish, whilst similar to a kink, differentiates itself in a cucial way. For the fetishist, a particular fetish must be present in order for them to achieve sexual arousal/enjoyment. For example, a person might have a fetish for public sex. Therefore, in order to reach sexual satisfaction they would need to have sex in public. Some people may be able to be satisfied with simply fantasizing about their fetish but usually their fetish needs to take place in order for them to be sexually fulfilled.

In simple terms, a kink is something you like to do, which enhances your sexual pleasure. Fetishes are a much deeper desire. A desire that must be satisfied in order to reach sexual satisfaction.
