LGBTQ Definitions Explained

I would like to pretend I am writing this piece purely because I want to pass on my considerable knowledge of LGBTQ definitions to you. But truth be told, I embarrassingly, have very little knowledge on this subject.

Last night I was watching one of my all time favourite TV shows, The L Word. I must have watched the original series from start to finish at least 5 times. But the series I’m talking about is the new and some may say improved, (I’m not quite sure how you can improve on perfection) L Word Generation Q. I have to tell you, this is a whole new ball game. In my much beloved original series , the show gently touched on male on male love and introduced towards the end of the show a trans character but on the whole it was pretty much just a straight up lesbian fest with the odd bisexual confusion thrown in for good measure.

The new show, however, has ladies who love ladies as just one of the hot topics. They are offering up all kinds of love in this show and whilst I’m totally here for it, I have to admit I don’t know all of the terminology and at times I was a little lost.

For example Cis, they talk using this word and I was wondering what it means. turns out it is a term for us folk who are the same gender now that we were at birth, who knew? Not me that’s for sure.

Time for a list

I decided to delve deep and come up with an exhaustive list for you lovelies so you need not be as confused/ignorant as I once was.

I feel like in the not to distant future many more letters will be added to LGBTQ but for the time being lets start with these letters and then I will add other terms of interest after them.

LGBTQ Definitions

Lesbian –  A lady who loves the ladies.

Gay – Boys who love Boys.

Bisexual – Some may say confused, some say greedy but the official meaning is a person attracted to more than one sex, gender or gender identity. Can be likened to pansexual (more on that later).

Transgender – This is a description of someone who has or is transitioning from living as one gender to another.

Queer – An umbrella term used to describe people who do not identify as straight/Cis Gender. Due to its historically derogatory use, a lot of LGBTQ people still don’t like using this terminology.

Everything else that might be of interest

Now lets get in to all of the other terms, which you may of heard but not really understood.

Androgyny – A gender expression that has elements of both masculinity and femininity.

Asexual – Someone who does not experience sexual attraction towards other people. This does not mean that they might not experience romantic and or emotional attraction to someone, just never sexual attraction.

Cisgender – A term used to describe a person who is the same gender now as they were at birth.

Gender Fluid – Someone who does not identify with a fixed gender.

Homophobia – The fear or hatred of people who are attracted to members of the same sex.

Non – Binary – An adjective that describes a person that does not identify as a man or a woman. Usually they identify as somewhere in between or they could also fall completely outside of these categories.

Pansexual – Describes someone who can have romantic and sexual attraction to people of any gender. Can be used interchangeably with bisexual.

Transitioning – A series of processes that a transgender person might undergo to allow themselves to live more fully as their true gender.

So there you have it. This is by no means an exhaustive list but it does highlight a lot of the main words used. I hope you find this as interesting to read as I did to write it. I have a date with the L Word to get back to. So, over and out lovers!
